A national reference hospital for West Africa 

Bouygues Bâtiment International delivered the International Hospital of Abomey-Calavi, a landmark healthcare facility designed to become Benin’s national reference hospital and the largest hospital in West Africa. 

Developed over 48,000 m² across two levels, the hospital provides 434 beds and delivers a comprehensive range of specialised medical services, including: 

  • Emergency and intensive care 
  • Radiology, radiotherapy and chemotherapy 
  • Dialysis and neurology 
  • Nine high-tech operating theatres, certified to ISO 5 and ISO 7 standards 

Designed to improve access to high-quality care across the region, the hospital also plays a strategic role in medical training and research, supporting the long-term development of Benin’s healthcare system.

Advanced infrastructure for performance and resilience 

The International Hospital of Abomey-Calavi integrates state-of-the-art technical systems designed to ensure optimal operating conditions for both patients and medical staff.

Its advanced infrastructure includes: 

  • 52 air handling units and 114 extraction fans 
  • Over 900 terminal units 
  • A 4 MW cooling system supporting critical medical environments 
  • Extensive digital monitoring to ensure reliability and performance 

Built with strong environmental commitments, the project achieved EDGE green building certification and received the Topsite Innovation label, recognising its efforts in biodiversity protection and energy performance monitoring.

As a flagship public health facility, the International Hospital of Abomey-Calavi marks a decisive step forward in strengthening healthcare infrastructure and long-term medical resilience across West Africa.
