Renovation and reinforcement of a century-old tunnel

Connecting Switzerland and Italy, the Simplon Tunnel is one of the longest railway structures in the world, at nearly 20 kilometers. Swiss Federal Railways entrusted PraderLosinger with bringing this double single-track tunnel, which opened in 1906, up to current standards.

Thanks to tailor-made logistics and phasing, the teams were able to carry out all the renovation work while maintaining rail traffic: renovation of the electrical and drainage networks, reinforcement and widening of the structure, lowering of the base slab, renewal of the ballast, and widening of the technical niches.

These operations have improved rail traffic safety and also cleaned up the two tunnels.
