Backfilling and preparation of urban right-of-ways
The project is part of the development of the Flaubert eco-neighborhood, a large-scale urban project spanning nearly 90 hectares on the south bank of the Seine, on former port brownfields and railway rights-of-way located between Rouen and Petit-Quevilly. Phases 1 and 2 of the backfilling work are part of the preparation of future sites designated for urban development.
The work is being carried out in a flood-prone area and in direct proximity to active rail lines, requiring rigorous management of earthworks, control of runoff, and precise monitoring of settlement.
One of the key aspects of the project is the optimization of cut-and-fill material flows across the site. Excavated materials from nearby areas are prioritized for reuse in creating platforms and pre-loading layers, thereby limiting the need for external materials and reducing the need to transport materials to distant sites. This approach significantly reduces truck travel and associated impacts.
Phase 1 included advance backfilling, the installation of drainage materials, geotextiles, vertical drains, and a Berlin wall. Phase 2 continues this approach, integrating between existing rail infrastructure and urban facilities, with earthworks consisting primarily of backfilling and additional retaining structures.
The combination of backfilling, vertical drainage, and retaining structures ensures the stability of future urban platforms while adhering to a resource-optimized construction approach.
