An iconic work

Opened in 1995, the Normandy Bridge marked a turning point in French engineering by becoming, at the time of its opening, the largest cable-stayed bridge in the world. Measuring 2.14 kilometers in length, it spans the Seine estuary in a single stretch, connecting the industrial hub of Le Havre to the tourist destination of Honfleur.

Its composite span extends 856 meters across an area swept by winds that can exceed 100 km/h.

An unprecedented deployment of innovation

The choice of a cable-stayed bridge was an economical and aesthetic solution that met the constraints imposed by the site: a conventional bridge would have required supports capable of withstanding impacts from boats, while a suspension bridge would have generated significant additional maintenance costs.

To overcome a 6% gradient, the installation of the concrete decks for the north access viaduct required the development of a novel method patented by Bouygues at the time: stair-step pushing. This iconic structure is now a major transport artery that promotes the region's economic development.
