Connecting Two Economic Capitals in Record Time
The Gautrain project is one of the most emblematic railway infrastructure projects in Southern Africa. It aims to efficiently link Pretoria and Johannesburg, two major economic hubs separated by significant distances and heavy road congestion.
With 80 kilometres of rail track, including 15 kilometres of tunnels, 500 metres of cut-and-cover tunnel and three underground stations, the Gautrain represents a major step forward in providing fast, reliable and safe rail transport.

A Challenging Geological Environment
The construction of the Gautrain required adaptation to particularly complex geological conditions, notably the crossing of dolomitic rock—limestone formations over 2.5 billion years old that are both extremely resistant and prone to collapse. To ensure the stability of the structures, Bouygues Travaux Publics adapted the foundations to this very specific ground, using several types of structural solutions depending on the constraints.
The project also stood out for its environmental commitment, including the preservation of relocated trees, the limitation of noise pollution and the reuse of excavated material generated during tunnel construction. Thanks to these initiatives, the project received an award at the Green Supply Chain Awards in 2009.

Our projects

Gautrain Rapid Rail System
Design, construction and operation of an 80-km rapid rail line, delivered in time for the 2010 FIFA World Cup and recognised for its environmental performance.

High Speed 2 (HS2)
Between London and Birmingham, as part of the Align consortium, we built 21.6 km of infrastructure, including a 16 km twin-tube tunnel and a 3.4 km viaduct.

Nîmes-Montpellier rail bypass
Construction of 80 km of new track, including 60 km of high-speed track and 183 bridges. A public-private partnership.

Rhine-Rhône high-speed rail
A key infrastructure project, the Rhine–Rhône high-speed rail line connects regions and improves their accessibility thanks to 140 km of new track, 29.1 km of which were built by Bouygues Travaux Publics.
