Supporting urban growth

Line 1 of the Abidjan metro meets an urgent need: to ease traffic flow in a rapidly expanding capital city facing road congestion and strong population growth. This 37 km north-south line will connect Anyama to Port-Bouët along an existing corridor, serving seven municipalities and 18 stations. With a capacity of over 500,000 passengers per day, this metro line will significantly reduce travel times for local residents.

Led by Société Ivoirienne de Construction du Métro d'Abidjan, a subsidiary of Bouygues Travaux Publics, in a design-build consortium, the project includes 20 new engineering structures and seven existing ones, a viaduct over the Ébrié lagoon, 40 pedestrian bridges and three underpasses, and a dedicated railway depot in Abobo Sagbé. It marks a major transformation of the urban landscape and mobility in Greater Abidjan.

Promoting local development

The ambitious social and CSR initiatives deployed around the project maximize the positive impact on the region. More than 2,000 Ivorian workers have already been recruited, with plans to increase this number to 3,040 jobs thanks to a comprehensive training, skills transfer, and subcontractor support program. The Second Chance School program trains young people in our trades through a course that includes an internship in France.

Structured local initiatives strengthen ties with communities: regular consultations with traditional leaders and associations, awareness-raising in schools, educational materials such as the Petit Ladji comic books, local radio stations, and site visits. At the same time, the project relies on advanced digitalization—BIM, prefabricated component tracking, digital quality control—to ensure performance, safety, and transparency.
