Design and construction of a roll-on/off port to accommodate ferries

After helping to build the strategic port of Tanger Med 1, Bouygues Travaux Publics was awarded the contract—in a joint venture with Bymaro—to design and construct the city’s new port terminal, which will accommodate roll-on/roll-off ships. The proposed site plan variation allowed for easier navigation for ferries and favored a radial layout around the entrance channel. Two breakwaters, 1,230 and 1,200 meters long, eight ferry berths consisting of quay blocks and dolphins, and a 42-hectare logistics platform were constructed. The main breakwater consists of two sections: a first section with a sloped embankment, protected by an Acropodes™ shell, and a second section formed of twenty-three reinforced concrete caissons, prefabricated and then submerged.

The use of prefabricated caissons shortened the construction time and allowed for a narrower breakwater, thereby reducing the project’s environmental impact by minimizing the structures’ footprint and the volume of materials used.
