Design-construction of the port of Tangier and its extension
A sandy beach backed by desert, exposed to the waves of both the Mediterranean and the Atlantic: this was Oued Rmel, 40 kilometers east of Tangier, until the end of the last century. Since then, container ships from all over the world have been arriving at a port that has enabled Morocco to establish itself as one of the hubs of global maritime trade. In partnership with BYMARO, a subsidiary of Bouygues Bâtiment International, Bouygues Travaux Publics has been awarded the design and construction contract for the port of Tangier (Med 1).
The chosen design combines AccropodesTM breakwaters and absorbent caissons, depending on the depth, to optimize the layout and provide 14 hectares of additional land area. Constructed using slipform on land before being launched into the water, the caissons are composed of chambers with perforated walls on the sea side to reduce the impact of waves and limit crossings.

Extraordinary dikes and quays
The extension of this port (Med 2) included the construction of two new composite levees, with slopes and caissons, as well as 1,200 meters of quays, providing an additional annual capacity of 5.2 million containers. The main breakwater consisted of a 955-meter sloping breakwater (including 5,760 Accropodes™) and a 2,710-meter caisson breakwater (96 four-lobed caissons).
The secondary breakwater consisted of a 377-meter sloping breakwater (including 3,581 AccropodesTM) and a 341-meter caisson breakwater (10 four-lobed caissons).
