Lifting the Queen's Wharf viewing platforms
The Queen's Wharf project is transforming the centre of Brisbane with a vast hotel and leisure complex comprising four hotels connected by three panoramic sky bridges. Multiplex entrusted VSL with the design and execution of the lifting of these three structures, weighing approximately 400 tonnes and installed 60 metres above ground level. The operations took place between 2021 and 2023.
To enhance safety and limit work at height, the walkways were pre-assembled on the ground, then slid and lifted into position using cable jacks. This method ensured precise load control and optimised timeframes.
Wind stability was a major challenge. The walkways, still suspended and not yet attached to their final supports, could move in strong gusts. VSL therefore used guide cables adapted to the configuration and weight of each structure to control these movements and ensure safe lifting.
Certain elements, such as retractable, remote-controlled guide braces, were designed to reduce the need for work at height. Finally, the RIO control system developed by VSL enabled synchronised lifting, with continuous monitoring of loads, speeds and heights.
